The tax identification number in Tunisia

The tax identification number (matricule fiscal) is the unique identifier assigned to every natural or legal person conducting economic activity in Tunisia. It is issued by the tax administration upon registration and must appear on all commercial documents: invoices, quotes, purchase orders, contracts and official correspondence.

Structure of the Tunisian tax ID

The Tunisian tax ID consists of 13 characters in full format, divided into 5 segments:

  • Tax identifier — 7 digitsUnique number assigned to the taxpayer by the tax administration.
  • Check key — 1 letterVerification letter computed from the identifier. All letters except I, O and U.
  • VAT code — 1 letterIndicates the taxpayer's VAT status.
    • A — Obligatory subject
    • B — Optional subject
    • D — Partial subject by option
    • P — Partial subject
    • N — Non-subject
  • Category code — 1 letterDefines the type of taxpayer.
    • M — Legal entity
    • C — Commercial / Industrial
    • P — Liberal profession
    • N — Non-taxable employer
    • E — Secondary establishment
  • Establishment no. — 3 digitsIdentifies the establishment. 000 for the main establishment, 001, 002… for secondary ones.
